What are ISO Standards?

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent organization that has established internationally recognized industry standards to assist companies with establishing quality, performance-driven, and and effective "best practices" within their organization. 

 

At its core, ISO standards focus on use of Edward Deming's Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) lifecycle to demonstrate effective planning, execution, monitoring, and continual improvement of process activities performed within the organization and operation activities based on industry standards.

What are the most common ISO standards organizations use within U.S. commercial?

The most recognized ISO standards used within the U.S. and worldwide are 

ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems, ISO 20000-1 IT Service Management Systems, and

ISO 27001 Information Security Management System.

Other ISO standards are specific to industries and include:

ISO 27701 Privacy Information Managements

ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems

ISO 22301 Business Continuity Management Systems

Do I Have to Obtain Certification?

Although certified training is not required to obtain certification, it is a good practice for at least one person within the organization to obtain certified training from a reputable ISO trainer.
